FESTIVAL PRESS RELEASE:

GLOBAL FAMILY FESTIVAL and ART EXHIBITION ANNOUNCED

Contact: Kristin Faust  916-457-4599

Global Family Festival and Art Exhibition will be held Saturday, September 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Sierra 2 Community Center located at 24th street and 4th Avenue in Sacramento. This unique festival celebrating multiracial families, people and communities will both educate and entertain festival go-ers with great music, food, vendors, children's activities and artists. The Festival is free to the public.

An exciting aspect of the festival is the juried art exhibition that will be held the same day as the festival. The Call to Artists requests art that depicts multiracial people and families and broader themes of racial harmony.

Festival founder Kristin Faust comments "Growing up in Sacramento in the 60's and 70's I learned a lot about tolerance and equality having friends and neighbors of all races. The Festival is an opportunity to say thank you to Sacramento and all of its residents who help create a supportive environment for the many multiracial people and families who live here including my own."

The Festival is also an opportunity for multiracial people and families to find products, information and other support. Books, children's toys, and wedding items geared especially for multiracial families are just some of the products expected to be available for sale at the festival.

The 2000 census data for the first time counted multiracial people and over 6% of California's population identified themselves this way. The number of interracial marriages in the United States has increased tenfold since 1960 and the top three categories of babies born in Sacramento County by ethnic/racial category are white, Latino and then "mixed."  Families become multiracial in different ways: by birth, by marriage, by adoption and by tracing their own roots. As festival co-founder David Hunt noted recently "It's hard to find a family in Sacramento that isn't multiracial."
